JAMB to commence e-testing in 2013 UTME

Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), says candidates are to answer questions by e-testing in the 2013 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME). The registrar made the disclosure in an interview in Bwari on Tuesday. He said that by e-testing, every candidate would answer questions on computer and await the marking of the scripts by the computer automatically. “The board shall be commencing e-testing in the 2013 UTME for candidates because this is what is obtained everywhere in the world,’’ he said. Ojerinde explained that e-testing would facilitate quick delivery of results to candidates and reduce anxiety by candidates who had been previously waiting longer for their results by manual testing.

The registrar said that e-testing for candidates would be optional in the 2013 UTME to ensure qualitative and total delivery by the board. He also said that charges for the 2013 UTME forms might increase, due to the cost of maintenance of the computers to be used for the testing. He said further that the cost of subsequent forms would come down after some years of full implementation of e-testing. Ojerinde said there would be at least one e-testing centre in one state of the 36 states of the federation for the 2013 UTME. The registrar said the actual date to start the sales of 2013 UTME forms had not been announced, adding that the board would meet in September to decide that. (NAN)

WHAT IS NEW WITH JAMB?

JAMB introduces three (3) testing methods for 2013 UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced three options for the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for candidates. Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, Registrar of JAMB, made the announcement, on Wednesday, when the House of Representatives Committee on Education visited him on an oversight function. Ojerinde listed the options as Paper and Pencil Testing (PPT), Dibu Based Test (DBT), where questions would be presented on computers and answers would be on paper and Computer Based Testing (CBT) where both questions and answers would be done on computer. Ojerinde stated that candidates were at liberty to choose one of the three options in the 2013 UTME. The registrar said that the most advantageous part of the CBT was that candidates would get their scores few minutes after writing the examination on their GSM cell phones.

``The internet age has come to stay with us hence as actors in the new age, you cannot afford to stay on the fence, you must be prepared to join the train or else you are left behind,'' Dibu said. He urged candidates to study hard for the 2013 UTME, adding that consistent hard work was the panacea to success in any examination. Earlier, Rose Oko, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, said that the members were on a visit to the board because of the importance of education to the society. ``The examination process is very key and strategic in education as well as the sanctity of the examination,'' she stressed. Oko commended the board for its quick release of the 2012 UTME results and urged it to sustain the tempo. NAN

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT JAMB

What is the meaning of the acronym JAMB?
(JAMB) stands for Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is Nigeria's official entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions.

History
By 1974, there were seven federal universities in the country. Every one of these existing universities conducted its own concessional examination and admitted its students. However, this system of admission revealed serious limitations and quite often waste of resources in the process of administering the concessional examination, especially on the part of the candidates.

The general untidiness in the uncoordinated system of admissions into universities and the attendant problems were sufficient cause for concern to the committee of vice chancellors. In the 2009 University Matriculation Exam, the grading system of the normally reputable examination body was subject to serious controversy when the over all performance was one of the poorest on records.

Much to JAMB's embarrassment, it was later revealed that the machines which optically graded the papers had erroneous answers and the JAMB changed some students scores by as much as 15%.
